This painting was the first in a series of studies for “Terra Ferma”. My goal was to convey a sense of movement and emotion, while leaving it open to multiple interpretations. Although “I Have Seen Things” may quickly evoke the vastness of the ocean, I view it as symbolizing the journey many immigrants undertake—whether by land or sea.

I questioned whether to include a stronger central image to provide more emotional clarity. Abstraction can distance viewers, making it harder to connect with the narrative. But isn’t that often how we handle the issue of human migration? In the end, I chose ambiguity, leaving room for personal interpretation.
