When asked about what they notice about the city, most visitors answer me with qualities best linked with its public spaces: traffic, anonymity, diversity, and “never sleeps” convenience. Not many focus on how its inhabitants deal with the intensity. I like to think it is by retreating into the snow globes we call home. Or are they fish bowls? Either way, the city is full of such insulated bubbles and, occasionally, windows become bridges providing a glimpse of the life inside one of those bubbles. I know it always spurs my imagination.
