Washington Arch
Washington Arch
I like walking around the city and I like looking up. Often, I feel I am one of the few who gaze above the sidewalks and store windows. “Let Us Raise a Standard to Which the Wise and Honest Can Repair. The event is in the hand of God.” These words are inscribed on the southern attic of the arch in Washington Square Park. They are the words of someone who accepted a compromise in order to advance a great concept. A compromise that people who are honest with themselves can wisely justify supporting. Whether George Washington did or did not speak them at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 is a matter of debate, but I am glad I looked up.
